Human figure drawings
Charcoal and ink wash are ideal drawing materials for quickly defining the human figure in live model sessions. The goal of these drawings is to create convincing body language in the context of strong brush strokes and lines.
This series of charcoal and ink wash drawings focuses on creating convincing poses of the human figure using strong brush strokes and lines. In contrast to portraiture, where my goal is to convey human personality through facial features, these live model drawings attempt to place the physical presence of the human body in relationship to the space around it. A key to achieving this is to use the light source to define the shapes of the model's body through exaggerated shading with ink wash or charcoal. Likewise, capturing the way the model's body stands on the floor, or rests on a bench, or leans against furniture or props is critical to establishing a believable pose. My notion of a believable pose is achieved when I contemplate how drawn lines, charcoal marks and ink washes work together, convincingly or intriguingly, to define the surfaces and volumes of the marvelously complex human figure placed in a particular setting.
