Portraits
Capturing glimpses of character and mood is my goal in portrait drawings. I intentionally create lines and gestures that stand on their own as well as work together to achieve likeness. I seek a tug-of-war between abstraction and representation in my portraiture, a constant back and forth between seeing single lines as art versus the collective set of lines and gestures that make the portrait. Creating this state of flux in a drawing is intended to trigger a psychological connection with the person in the portrait. I am drawing the person's appearance and also wondering about their personality, circumstances, and mood at the moment. When I succeed in conveying the mood or other intangible quality about the human being in the portrait, it arises from more than the sum of the lines on the paper. How this happens is a mysterious process (with more failures than successes) but this is the challenge I find captivating in drawing portraits.
